Jon Lohman
Jonathan Lohman is Program Director of the Virginia Folklife Program and Virginia State Folklorist. Jon earned B.A. at the University of North Carolina, an M.A. degree in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. degree in Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. Jon taught courses on folklife and oral history at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as the Program Coordinator for the Urban Studies Program.
In 1991 Jon was Corps Member of Teach for America with the assignment as a fifth-grade teacher at Harriet Tubman Elementary School in New Orleans. Jon has also produced and hosted a radio program in Chicago on folk music. Since coming to VFH in 2001, Jon has revived the Virginia Folklife Program, which had been dormant for several years because of a staff vacancy.
As the state folklorist, he works to document, present, and support Virginia's rich cultural folkways through a variety of mediums, including audio and video documentation, exhibit design, public programming, and project development. He has produced music recordings, including the Paschall Brothers’ first release, “Songs for our Father,” as well as bluegrass, old time, and gospel releases on VFH’s Crooked Road Series.
He has presented at numerous festivals, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the National Folklife Festival, Merlefest, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival, the American Folk Festival, and others. Jon has published scholarly and popular writings on such topics as Mardi Gras, murals and memorial walls, duck decoy carving, and southern folklore.

From 3-5pm Master Artists and their Apprentices will show how Virginia's traditional arts are kept. Demonstrations by craft and performing artists who have participated in Virginia Folklife's Masters and Apprentices Program will take place in the breezeway and luthier shop area.

7pm-Concert at the amphitheater featuring Master Musicians and their apprentices opening the show.
Other performers will include The Dale Jett and & The Carter Family Trio and Jonny & The Jambusters.
