Remembering Bobby Patterson

Bobby PattersonWe lost a dear friend last week when founding Midday Mountain Musician Bobby Patterson passed away on Sunday, September 24. Bobby, and his regular musical partner, Willard Gayheart (both members of the influential bluegrass band The Highlanders) started playing the midday sessions in 2006. The two have played at the Music Center on just about every Tuesday since. Bobby was an icon of the Galax and Blue Ridge Mountain music communities. His talent, heart, vision, commitment, passion, and willingness to help others in their musical pursuits will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bobby's wife and family.

A multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass), Bobby played with Kyle Creed and The Camp Creek Boys and many other bluegrass and old-time ensembles. He and Kyle also started a studio and record label, Mountain Records. Afterwards, Bobby went on to start his own record label, Heritage Records. As president of the Blue Ridge Music Makers Guild since 1999, he worked with emerging youth musicians year-round, helped organize festivals and concerts, and promoted traditional music. As a leader in the Galax Moose Lodge, he assisted in organizing the annual Galax Old Fiddler's Convention, considered one of the oldest and largest fiddler's conventions in the world. Bobby was awarded the Virginia Heritage Award in 2009, and was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in 2015.

Bobby Patterson was a member of the Blue Ridge Music Center family. We will miss him dearly. Thank you for all the music, Bobby. Rest in peace.
