David Via (rhymes with sky) has been declared a Virginia Master Folk Artist by the Virginia Folk Life Association and Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Via apprenticed his son, Mason Via, through that program in 2016 and 2017. Via won the 2009 Mountain Stage/ American Folk Alliance songwriters contest and has picked up the Merlefest Chris Austin songwriter prize in three separate categories. Combining bluegrass, roots, and blues while being a voice for the working man, Via’s music and lyrics speak to the heritage of Blue Ridge Mountains and the people who have lived here for generations.
