This event is part of DocStock IV, our annual birthday celebration honoring Doc Watson!

Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia. His guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, and in seven nations in Asia.
In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier of great renown. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. He produces about 20 instruments a year, mostly guitars; he is almost as well-known for the mandolins he has made. Good friend Doc Watson owned a Henderson mandolin. He said, “That Henderson mandolin is as good as any I’ve had my hands on. And that’s saying a lot, because I’ve picked up some good ones.”
Some of Henderson’s instruments are intricately decorated but are most respected for their volume, tone, and resonance. Blues guitarist John Cephas said that Wayne Henderson “is probably the most masterful guitar maker in this whole United States.” There is a waiting list for Henderson’s guitars made up of the famous (and not-so-famous).
Above and beyond his great talents as a musician and luthier, Wayne Henderson is known as a “friend to everyone” and shares his talents and knowledge unselfishly.
The Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition was established in 1995 to express appreciation for this living legend. A portion of the proceeds from the Festival are placed into a scholarship fund to aid local young musicians in continuing their educations. Through the 2018 festival, scholarships totaled more than $237,950.

Charismatic. Creative. Romantic. Traditional. Unpredictable. Thrilling. All words that have been used to describe 18-year-old Swiss-American bluegrass prodigy Ettore Buzzini, whose unique songwriting, gifted picking, and show-stopping performances are drawing new young fans to cutting-edge bluegrass.
Imagine if Earl Scruggs, Led Zeppelin, and Chopin got together for an improvised jam on stage: it might sound something like young Swiss-American songwriting and banjo prodigy Ettore Buzzini’s unique sound. To the casual listener, Ettore’s might be mistaken for simply hard-driving Bluegrass. But anyone who listens a little more closely will quickly notice that Ettore’s virtuosic music blends the iconic acoustic sounds of Americana, youthful energy and hard drive of pop-rock, and, most forcefully, the epic, soul-stirring, romantic emotions of classical music.
Ettore (pronounced like “Letter-A”) is bringing a decidedly GenAlpha take on traditional Bluegrass, rooted in tradition, but with a innovative, colorful playing style that is irresistibly distinct, and a songwriting style completely outside the mainstream. Haunting lyrics, vivid imagery and epic-sounding compositions are the foundation of songs like “Ragnarok”, his original song about a young warrior ready to fight the ultimate battle; and “Birth of Eros”, an instrumental banjo piece about a soul in purgatory who finds hope in love. This unique, fresh style, a product of his Euro-American roots, is bringing new attention to the genre from GenAlpha.
This young artist’s star is soaring as he takes the Folk-Americana scene by storm, sweeping contest awards and garnering praise and invitations from all corners of the Folk-Americana-Bluegrass world. With festivals, television, and venue shows coming throughout summer and fall 2025, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to say “I saw him before…”
